Rare mid-century Danish modern Couroc "RIVER QUEEN" serving tray.
A midcentury serving tray by Couroc of Monterey, California, (1848-1998) - The River Queen pattern, circa 1960s. Made of a black resin called Phenolic and hand inlaid with the image of a the River Queen ferry boat in natural wood with brass accents and red and white paddle wheel. With the original label.
The Couroc Company produced graphic, whimsical trays made by skilled artisans. Founder Guthrie Courvoisier developed a material "impervious to alcohol, boiling water and cigarette burns," according to their label. Courvoisiers wife, Moira Wallace, Couroc's chief designer, led a commune of artists who used an array of local materials as inlay into these resin pieces.
The River Queen was a sidewheel steamer which became closely associated with President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S. Grant while operating on the Potomac River, and was used for an unsuccessful peace conference during the last year of the American Civil War. Later it operated as a ferry serving the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket during the late 19th century. Late in its career, it returned to the Potomac as an excursion vessel, and in 1911, it was destroyed in a fire.
